1st Twilight Monk painting

Most people don't know this, but I'd actually started planning Twilight Monk in 2000.  I didn't know how to paint, or how to write compelling stories or anything. But my philosophy was always to just throw myself at something with as much passion as I could muster and the results would shape themselves into something great.  Years later, the characters came to life a lot more, and now its a full on webcomic and video game! Well... its GOING to be a video game.  Anyway I still like the layout of this image. Maybe I should repaint it.

Legend of Zelda fan piece from 2000

Before Wind Waker, we really hadn't seen an extremely stylized Zelda. So back then I really wanted to work in video games and the best way to do that, I thought was to do fan art.  Turns out I was right. I landed a gig at an indie studio soon after and then went to Capcom a couple of years later.

Some of my first Photoshop work

Heavily inspired by Air Rix and the art of Disgaea.

Free

In 2001 I was experimenting with a more loose art style from my previous work.

A never before released Broken Spirits cover. The book was never finished, nothing was done with it, and it will never be seen again! So this is all you get! And you're gonna like it! :)

Tom Waits... the animated series.

One of my favorite musicians and greatest influences in my life. I could never meet the man. There's no way that he could be as weird/amazing in real life as he is on his recordings.

Starcraft Fan art

Before I worked at Blizzard, I did a lot of fan art for them. This was done in 2001 before any kind of talk of SC2 even existed.

More Gen X fan art from 1997

Gen X fan art from 1997

Back in 1997, I really wanted to work for Marvel comics. My own indie comic CreeD was doing okay, but sales were slumping and I wanted to go more professional. So I did a couple of fan pieces for marvel.  I was always a fan of Bachalo because he uses such interesting shapes. I think his old work STILL influences me a lot.

Line art for CreeD Imaginary

Isnt the digital age cool? I could never have shown you guys these original black and white versions of covers and pages if I didnt have a blog. Back before the internets, the only way to get stuff in the public eye was to publish it.  In the future, all I'll have to do is THINK something, and if you wanted to see it, you can! :)

Unused CreeD cover from 1997

Unused CreeD cover for a story that I never got to make. Do you think that I had enough detail?

CreeD #2 original artwork for sale on Ebay?!???

Thats right... I actually still own this piece.  If you want to own it, mosey on over to my ebay store and put in an offer!
This was drawn while I was still in High School. I still remember my teacher taking it away and just as she was about to throw it in the trash, she looked at it... put it on her desk, and asked me to stay after class to talk about it.

CreeD Utopiate #2 original

More original watercolors from Utopiate back in 2002.  This was close to the last mainstream comic that I had published until CreeD was collected at IDW with CreeD Omnichronos.

Original watercolors for CreeD Utopiate #1

The final version turned out VERY different from this.  In hindsight, I thought it would be cool to make Mark Farley grow up a bit more. But in after doing the book... I realized that I didn't like him as much as a 17 year old. Thats like trying to recreate the Calvin and Hobbes magic with Calvin all grown up. It might make for a cool painting, but not a series.

Creed page.

Anyone remember this page? :)

CreeD watercolors from 2002 Image comics series.

During the CreeD Utopiate year, I was doing a lot f watercolors. I had a strange sense of color... for real.  I think I was trying intentionally to make a soap commercial.

Original CreeD Appletree cover in B/W

In 1999 I moved to California and worked in fashion for a while. In my free time I started to plan a return to CreeD with "Appletree". We only printed about 500 copies of the book.  So it didnt do too well. This was right before my run on Ghost Rider... which was the best selling comic of 2001.  So I think I had the WORST selling comic AND the BEST selling comic in 1 year. I think thats kind of a record of some kind.

Combo magazine cover

Back in the 90s there were these things called magazines. Anyway there was a comic book magazine called Combo. They were super cool to me and interviewed me and let me draw a cover for them.  I think this was in 1996.

Some old raver fairy art.

I didnt actually learn to paint in Photoshop. I learned digital coloring from Illustrator. About 1999 I did a series of fairy drawings in raver clothes. Ya, I had the 24 inch pipes too.

Even more bombshell

At some point Bombshell evolved into something a bit more Evangelion influenced.  You can clearly see the Yoji Shinkawa influence in the mech designs here. I did this after playing Metal Gear Solid 2 on playstation in 2001 or so.

Monday, June 25, 2012

Wait, I got more bombshell for ya...

Oh, theres absolutely NO metal Gear solid influence in THIS one. Jeeez... I feel like a blatant thief! Whatever, it was 2001... everything was stolen from somewhere.  Anyway this is more Bombshell stuff. After I traded in my Jncos and moved into a more serious look.

More Bombshell

This was drawn with ink and prismacolor markers before I knew how to use photoshop in 1997. Bombshell was always crawling out of the wreckage of a destroyed makeshift mech.

What the hell is bombshell?

I really wanted to draw mechs after doing Creed for a few years. So I started creating this character that was a superhot raver chick that assimilated the metals around her to create a mech that was unique to whatever environment she was in. Thus... Bombshell came to be. Or... did not come to be. I didn't do anything with this. It never became a book or anything at all.

Old TMNT comic book art. Unpublished, but still not bad!

I did this when I was just a lil kid of about 16 years old. I guess it was right about when CreeD came out. Anyway, I thought you'd like to see it. Drawn in 1993

Old Unused Ghost Rider art.

Here's an old image that you may or may not have seen from Ghost Rider. It's astounding to me how many pieces are hiding in my closet.  I inked this one myself. Although the amazing Danny Miki inked the entire series that I worked on for Marvel. This is from 2001.

Demo #1 Painting a Lizard/fishman guard

I made a painting and recorded using the magic of video for you. Ever wonder how to paint in photoshop? -Trent
